How long does an airline have to pay my refund?
The short answer
Under 14 CFR 260.2, a prompt refund is due within 7 business days for credit card purchases and within 20 calendar days for cash, cheque, debit card or other payments. These deadlines apply to US and foreign airlines serving the United States.
The two deadlines
- Credit card purchases: within 7 business days.
- Cash, cheque, debit card or other payment: within 20 calendar days.
What the clock starts from
The summary of section 260.2 that we read measures the 7 business day and 20 calendar day periods from the refund request in its definition, while the rule also says refunds are automatic when your right is undisputed. Read sections 260.2 and 260.10 for the exact starting point.
Form of refund
Section 260.10 says refunds go back in the original form of payment unless you agree to a cash equivalent. A voucher or credit can only be offered as an alternative to a refund, you must affirmatively accept it, and it must stay valid for at least five years.
Cancelled and renumbered flights
A 5 December 2025 Federal Register rule paused enforcement of certain refund requirements for renumbered flights with no significant change or delay until 30 June 2026. we did not read what applies after that date. This is a US rule. UK CAA guidance says a refund should be paid within 7 days, per the GOV.UK passenger guide, and the two systems are separate.
