How long before an airline declares a bag lost and how much can I claim?

The short answer

NI Direct says luggage is only declared lost after 21 days, and you must claim within seven days of that date. The UK CAA says the maximum is around £1000, though it would be very rare to receive that much.

When a bag counts as lost

NI Direct says your luggage is only declared lost after 21 days, and until then the bag is treated as delayed, not lost. The CAA page does not give a number of days after which a bag counts as lost.

Claim deadlines

The CAA gives these time limits for written claims to the airline. NI Direct says a claim for a bag declared lost must be made within seven days from that date, and a damaged bag within seven days of receiving it. The two pages describe lost bags slightly differently, so claim as early as you can.

How much you can claim

The CAA says there is no fixed amount and it depends on the value of the lost goods. The maximum is around £1000, but it would be very rare to receive this much. NI Direct gives about £1,000 sterling and says the exact figure varies with exchange rates. Neither page gives the Special Drawing Rights figure, so I have not stated one.

The CAA says most airlines reimburse essentials bought during a delay and some pay a daily rate. Airlines do not allow new for old replacement, so value is based on the item's age when lost. Travel insurance may pay more but usually has an excess of around £40 and often a claim time limit.

What to do

Report the lost, delayed or damaged bag at the airport and keep the Property Irregularity Report that airline staff complete. Keep receipts, credit card records or other proof of value. On a journey with two or more airlines, you can claim from any of them, though the final airline usually handles the claim. Airlines do not automatically cover consequential losses such as a missed cruise.
