Can you take a self-inflating life jacket on a plane?
The short answer
Yes, with airline approval. The FAA allows no more than two self-inflating personal safety devices, with no more than two small gas cartridges and two spare cartridges per device.
The FAA limits
The FAA says you may carry no more than two self-inflating personal safety devices, such as life jackets. Each may have no more than two small gas cartridges, and you may carry no more than two spare cartridges per device. Airline approval is required.
Cabin or checked?
The FAA page we read does not say whether the device goes in the cabin or the hold, so ask your airline. Models that use a squib (a small explosive charge) are forbidden.
