Can you take a hammer or multi-tool on a plane?

The short answer

Hammers are not allowed in carry-on bags but are allowed in checked bags. Multi-tools with a knife of any length are prohibited in carry-on bags and allowed in checked bags if sheathed or securely wrapped.

Hammers

TSA lists hammers as not allowed in carry-on bags and allowed in checked bags. The TSA page we read carries a 2017 date, so check the current page before you travel.

Multi-tools

TSA says multi-tools with knives of any length are prohibited in carry-on bags. In checked bags they are allowed if sheathed or securely wrapped.

At the checkpoint

The final decision rests with the TSA officer. Pack tools in your checked bag when you can.
