Can you bring a lighter on a plane? TSA rules
The short answer
It depends on the type. TSA allows disposable and Zippo lighters in carry-on bags, but torch lighters, gun-shaped lighters and lighter fluid are not allowed in either carry-on or checked bags.
Disposable and Zippo lighters
TSA lists these as allowed in carry-on bags. In checked bags, TSA says lighters without fuel are allowed. Lighters with fuel are prohibited in checked bags, unless they follow the Department of Transportation exemption. That exemption allows up to two fueled lighters if they are properly enclosed in a DOT approved case.
Arc, electronic and battery lighters
TSA lists arc, electronic and e-lighters as allowed in carry-on bags only, with special instructions. Measures must be taken to prevent unintentional activation of the heating element on board. TSA gives these examples: removing the battery from the lighter, or placing the lighter in a protective case. TSA also lists lithium battery powered lighters as allowed in carry-on and not allowed in checked bags.
Not allowed anywhere
- Torch lighters: TSA says they create a thin, needle-like flame that reaches 2,500 F, and lists them as not allowed in carry-on or checked bags.
- Gun lighters: not allowed in carry-on or checked bags.
- Lighter fluid: not allowed in carry-on or checked bags.
At the checkpoint
The final decision always rests with the TSA officer at the checkpoint. If you have questions about the rules, TSA points to the FAA website.
