Can you bring sunscreen, perfume and toiletries on a plane? TSA rules
The short answer
Yes. TSA allows sunscreen, perfume, hand sanitizer and toothpaste in carry-on bags in containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less. All are also allowed in checked bags, with FAA limits on the total amount of restricted toiletries.
Carry-on
TSA lists sunscreen, perfume, hand sanitizer and toothpaste as allowed in carry-on bags in containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less. TSA says hand sanitizer must be in travel-size containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less per item under the 3-1-1 liquids rule.
Checked bags
TSA lists all four as allowed in checked bags. For sunscreen, perfume and hand sanitizer, TSA says the FAA limits the total amount of restricted medicinal and toiletry articles, including aerosols, in checked baggage.
FAA limits for checked bags
- Total per person: 2 kg (70 ounces) or 2 L (68 fluid ounces).
- Each container: no more than 0.5 kg (18 ounces) or 500 ml (17 fluid ounces).
At the checkpoint
The final decision always rests with the TSA officer at the checkpoint.
