Do you need a UK ETA, and how much does it cost?

The short answer

GOV.UK says an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) costs 20 pounds and lets you visit the UK, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man for up to 6 months. It lasts 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner.

Who needs an ETA

Most visitors need an ETA or a visa. GOV.UK says you usually need an ETA rather than a visa if you are from Europe, the USA, Australia, Canada or certain other countries.

Each person needs one, including babies and children. You can apply for other people. An ETA does not guarantee entry.

How to apply

Apply on the UK ETA app or online. You need the passport you will travel with, an email address, and a credit card, debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. You also upload or take a photo of the applicant's face.

You usually get a decision by email within a day, but it can take up to 3 working days. Wait for the confirmation email before you travel.

The fee is not refundable. If your application is rejected or details need changing, you apply again. GOV.UK warns that other websites may charge more and cannot give a faster decision.

Validity and what it allows

The ETA is linked to your passport and you can travel as many times as you like while it is valid. It allows tourism, visiting family and friends, a business trip or short-term study of up to 6 months. Check the official site before you pay or travel.
