How do I renew a US passport online or by mail?

The short answer

The State Department says eligible adults can renew online at opr.travel.state.gov or by mail. The passport book fee is $130. Online renewal cannot be expedited and needs at least 6 weeks before travel.

Renew online

The State Department says you can renew online if all of these apply:

• Your passport was valid for 10 years and expires within 1 year or expired less than 5 years ago.
• You are 25 or older and not changing your name or sex.
• You are not traveling for at least 6 weeks.
• You are in a U.S. state or territory when you apply.
• Your passport is not damaged and has not been reported lost or stolen.

Renew by mail

You can renew by mail if your passport was issued within the last 15 years, when you were 16 or older, and in your current name or you can show a name change document. You cannot renew a passport for a child under 16.

Mail fees are $130 for a book, $30 for a card and $160 for both. Add $60 for expedited service. Pay by personal check or money order to the U.S. Department of State, not cash. Do not pay the $35 facility fee when renewing by mail.

Official site warning

The State Department says the only official place to renew online is opr.travel.state.gov. It says other websites that claim to renew passports may be fraudulent, charge extra fees and put your data at risk. It says to check the site ends in .gov.

After you submit an online renewal, the old passport is cancelled. Do not use it to travel. Keep it, as it can still serve as proof of citizenship.
