What ID is accepted at a TSA checkpoint?

The short answer

Adults 18 and older must show valid ID at the TSA checkpoint. TSA accepts REAL ID cards, passports, trusted traveler cards and other documents on its list. Children under 18 do not need ID for domestic flights.

IDs on the TSA list

TSA says the list can change without notice, so check it again before you travel.

Mobile and digital IDs

TSA accepts certain mobile driver's licenses from states approved for federal use. The mDL must be based on a REAL ID, EDL or EID.

TSA also lists Apple Digital ID, Clear ID, Google ID pass and Samsung ID with CLEAR as digital IDs accepted as part of ongoing testing. The ConfirmID FAQ says you must also bring your physical ID to the checkpoint.

Expired ID, children and names

TSA currently accepts expired ID up to two years after expiration, for the listed forms of ID.

TSA does not require children under 18 to show ID within the United States. An unaccompanied minor with TSA PreCheck must show an acceptable ID to get expedited screening. Contact the airline about its own ID rules for under 18s.

Name suffixes such as Jr. may differ between boarding pass and ID. TSA treats that as an acceptable variation.
