Can I Take a CPAP Machine or Portable Oxygen Concentrator Through TSA?

The short answer

Yes at the TSA checkpoint. TSA says a CPAP must be removed from its carrying case for X-ray, while facemasks and tubing may stay in the case. Portable oxygen concentrators are allowed in carry-on and checked bags with special instructions, but use on board depends on your airline.

CPAP, BiPAP, APAP and nebulisers

TSA says a CPAP machine must be removed from its carrying case and undergo X-ray screening. Facemasks and tubing may remain in the case. You can bring your own transparent bag to hold the device. The same rule covers nebulisers, BiPAP and APAP devices. The TSA page does not address onboard use.

Portable oxygen concentrators

TSA lists portable oxygen concentrators as allowed in carry-on and checked bags, with special instructions. Citing the FAA, it says certain portable oxygen concentrators are permitted onboard, including the Inogen One, Sequal Eclipse and Airsep Lifestyle.

The FAA publishes acceptance criteria and TSA links to them. We could not read the FAA page, so check that the model is FAA accepted and confirm with your airline.

What the pages do not say

The TSA pages do not cover airline notice periods, medical certificates or battery requirements. Airlines set their own procedures, and rules differ for US, UK and EU carriers, so contact your airline well before you fly. The final decision at the checkpoint rests with the TSA officer.

Rules and fees change, so check the official page linked below before you travel.
