Can I Take a Drone, GoPro or Camera Batteries on a Plane?
The short answer
Spare camera and GoPro batteries must be in carry-on, not checked bags, within TSA's limits of 100 Wh for lithium ion or 2 g for lithium metal. Drones are allowed through the checkpoint, but TSA lists carry-on and checked as check with your airline.
Spare batteries
For lithium batteries of 100 watt hours or less, TSA says spare batteries must be carried in carry-on baggage only. Lithium metal (non-rechargeable) is limited to 2 grams of lithium per battery, and lithium ion (rechargeable) is limited to 100 Wh per battery. The spare battery rules cover personal electronics such as cameras, and power banks.
Batteries installed in a camera
TSA's page says installed batteries fall under separate FAA guidance, which we could not read. Check with your airline whether a camera with a battery inside may be checked.
Drones
TSA says drones are allowed through the checkpoint and lists both carry-on and checked bags as check with the airline. Drones with lithium batteries, fuel cells or certain parachute parts may be prohibited in baggage. The page was last updated on 29 March 2023.
Rules differ by airline and country
Airlines can set stricter rules, and UK and EU airports and authorities may apply their own. Before you fly, ask your airline about drones and batteries. The final decision at the checkpoint rests with the TSA officer.
