How long does a UK passport renewal take and what does it cost?
The short answer
GOV.UK says you will usually get your passport within 3 weeks. An adult 34-page passport costs £102 online or £115.50 on a paper form, and urgent options cost more.
Standard fees
GOV.UK's passport fees page lists these prices. The renew adult passport page confirms that it costs £102 to renew or replace your passport online, or £115.50 on a paper form.
- Adult (16 and over) standard 34-page: £102 online, £115.50 paper.
- Adult 54-page frequent traveller: £116 online, £129.50 paper.
- Child (under 16) standard 34-page: £66.50 online, £80 paper.
- Child 54-page frequent traveller: £80.50 online, £94 paper.
- Secure delivery of returned supporting documents usually costs an extra £5.
How long it takes
The HM Passport Office services page says you will usually get your passport within 3 weeks. Processing starts when the office receives your documents, and it can take longer if they need more information or an interview. They will tell you within 3 weeks if so.
GOV.UK also says not to book travel until you have a valid passport, because your new passport will not have the same number as your old one.
Urgent options
The urgent passport page lists two online services. The 1 week Fast Track is for renewals, changing personal details, replacing a lost, stolen or damaged passport, or getting a child passport. The 1 day Premium is for renewing an adult passport only, and you must hand in your old passport at the appointment.
- 1 day Premium: £239.50 (£253.50 for a 54-page passport). The passport is ready to collect 4 hours after your appointment.
- 1 week Fast Track: £192 adult (£206 for 54 pages), £156.50 child (£170.50 for 54 pages). Delivered by courier 1 week after your appointment.
- First adult passports and applicants outside the UK are not eligible for the urgent service.
- Cancelling within 48 hours of an appointment incurs a £34.50 admin fee.
Conflicting detail to note
The services page says a paper form from a post office costs an extra £16.00, while the fees page lists £115.50 for paper against £102 online. The two pages describe the paper surcharge differently, so check the current fee when you apply. Fees and times change, so check the official page before you pay.
